About the Commission

Duties & Responsibilities

The purpose of the Board of Cemetery Trustees is to provide an administrative agency to perform the duties, obligations and responsibilities attendant to the management, supervision and care of the city cemetery, Hillside. The City Clerk is also the Clerk of the Board and shall perform all duties prescribed in the Charter or bylaws of the Board.

Membership

 All members of the board of cemetery trustees shall be resident electors for the prescribed term of office. The residency requirement may be waived as provided in the Charter. Any member of the council, employee of the city or officer thereof may serve on the board.  The mayor, with the advice and consent of the city council, or the council acting on its own motion, may appoint members to staggered terms of office of the board of cemetery trustees as provided by the bylaws thereof. No member of the board of cemetery trustees shall receive compensation as such, but the city council may authorize payment of reasonable and necessary expenses incurred by any such member in the performance of authorized business of the board.

Meetings

Dates & Times

The Board of Cemetery Trustees meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every month at 8:30AM. Meetings are held at City Hall or Hillside Cemetery Chapel.

Hillside Cemetery is a registered location to participate in Wreaths Across America.  A Remembrance ceremony is performed at noon then, through generous donations, wreaths are respectively placed on veterans graves throughout the cemetery.
