General Information

2026 elections: August 4 and November 3

Voter approved Proposal 22-2 added several election and voting-related policies into the Michigan Constitution. These policies have been in place as of the 2024 elections.

Early Voting

Polls will be open for all voters the Second Saturday through the Sunday prior to Election Day at an Early Voting Site located at City Hall, 547 N. Carney Drive, St. Clair, MI 48079.

Elections for Mayor and Council

City Council consists of a Mayor and 6 Councilmembers.   The City is divided into 3 wards . Voters in all wards vote to elect the Mayor.  The Mayor is elected to represent the entire city.  Voters in each ward elect 2 Councilmembers to represent their ward.  

Elections for City Council are held in November of even years. The number of qualified candidates filed for Mayor and each ward will determine if an August primary is required.

Mayor and Council are 2 year terms that start on January 1. Meetings are held the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month. Special meetings are held as needed and average about 4-6 per year. 

Absentee Voting

By mail: Absentee voters can request a ballot be mailed to them up to 5:00pm the Friday before the election.

In the Clerk’s office:  The City Clerk’s office will be open 8:30am-4:30pm Monday-Friday and at designated times on the Saturday and/or Sunday before each election. Saturday and Sunday hours vary per election. Please check the Secretary of State website for hours: www.michigan.gov/vote

Absentee voters can request a ballot up to 4:00pm the Monday before the election. If you request the ballot the day before the election, you must vote the ballot in the Clerk’s office.

Election Day

Polls will be open on Election Day 7:00am-8:00pm: If you are in line by 8:00pm you will be permitted to vote.

Election Inspectors (to work at the polls) are needed for all elections. If you are interested in serving in this capacity, please complete an application and return it to the City Clerk’s office: 547 N. Carney Drive, St. Clair MI 48079.

How do I register to vote?

You must be registered to vote before participating in any election.

The Michigan Voter Information Center can verify your registration status and provide tools for the registration process.

When and where do I go to vote?

If you are unsure of your precinct or voter registration status, visit https://mvic.sos.state.mi.us/vote or  the map below. If you need additional information, please call the City Clerk’s Office.

What if I am not able to make it to the polls on Election day?

There are several options to request and receive your ballot before election day:

Absentee Voting: Absentee voters can request a ballot be mailed to them up to 5:00pm the Friday before the election.
Absentee Voting: Absentee voters can request a ballot in person up to 4:00pm the Monday before the election. If you request the ballot the day before the election, you must vote the ballot in the Clerk’s office.

What if I make a mistake on my Absent Voter ballot?

If you make a mistake on your ballot, you can return the ballot to the Clerk’s office and submit a written request for another. DEADLINES APPLY.

What if I already turned in my Absent Voter Ballot but changed by mind?

If you change your mind, by 5:00pm the Friday before Early voting starts (second Saturday prior to the election), you can request in writing your original ballot be ‘SPOILED’ and receive another. The original ballot is not counted.

I am a United States Service member, family of a United States Service member or a United States citizen but live overseas. How can I vote?

The City Clerk’s Office will be open at designated times on the Saturday and/or Sunday before each election, for absentee voting.

Absentee voters can obtain a ballot, to be voted at the City Clerk’s Office, until 4:00 pm on the Monday, before the election. If receiving a ballot on Monday, before the election, the ballot must be voted in the Clerk’s Office and returned to the Clerk.
